Mobile Ads – Effective sales tool or nuisance?

Mobile Pop Up Ads

We’ve all had it – scrolling on your phone, passing the time, you finally find the news article you’ve been hearing about the last few days only to have 90% of it blocked from view by a glaring advert trying to entice you to click away from what you were doing and buy some beard straighteners (in my case anyway).

You may have heard of people speaking about click-through rates (CTR) when it comes to measuring mobile advertising performance – this is basically the number of times the advert has been clicked divided by the number of times it has been shown or impressions (i.e. if you had 10 clicks and the advert was shown 100 times your CTR would be 10%.) According to trusted sources the internet average CTR is between 0.02% and 0.08%.

So what is the solution to increasing CTR? Bigger ads? More impressions? Certainly bigger ads may increase the risk of a stray digit clicking by accident and simply increasing the number of impressions would reach a larger audience but would the return outweigh the costs?

What if we looked at increasing user engagement through Augmented Reality (AR)? Instead of simply linking to a product page to buy, for example’s sake a sofa, a life size model of the sofa appeared in front of the user via their smartphone screen? Not only does this grab the attention of the user it is more likely to keep their attention to process what the advert is about. They are more likely to use word of mouth to mention the advert to their peers – again increasing CTR by either re showing the ad to their friends or driving traffic directly to the website of the brand – reaching potential customers that may not have ever seen the original ad.

As technology becomes more and more accessible and with the AR market expected to reach USD 97.76 Billion in the next 6 years it is important to recognise AR as a powerful digital marketing tool. It is a safe bet that the retailers and businesses that adopt this technology now will be the market leaders in the next decade.

With figures in 2020 showing 83.1 million consumers used AR every month and only 1% of retailers having adopted AR why not speak to us about how we can take your digital marketing ahead of your competitors?
